Mars: The First Step to Interstellar Residence

Hello, humans! As we all know that we’re living in the 21st century, a century dedicated specially to science and technology and their applications for the betterment of our mankind. Many missions have been proposed, some of which came into existence, some of them succeeded, some of them failed, some of them were useful to us and some of them were harmful and devastating. This mission is also one of all those missions which is soon coming out in existence and becoming the most awaited sensation of the century. Here, I’m talking about the mission whose agenda is to colonize Mars in upcoming decade or two. As we all know, our planet as it was before one or two centuries ago; is not the same thing it was back then. The resources were enough for the amount of population existed then, and everything was seemingly going in the right direction.

But now, you know, is not the case, unfortunately. The sources are depleting therefore their prices are reaching new heights than ever before, natural calamities are increasing in their numbers, and there are extremely major threats lingering onto our heads like the geomagnetic reversal, CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejection), and if this is not enough for you, then consider the local, stellar and other celestial threats like asteroids, comets approaching us, the moon distancing itself from us gradually. Hence, I must say that it is a really time to find a new home.

Considering these facts, many scientists and theorists and economists promoted the concept of new home, some other planet. A huge amount of research went on for years, and after this entire research of our solar system, the very basic interstellar neighborhood we have (or as of now, that’s all we can reach to), we’ve got solution, the so-called brother of mother Earth, Mars! The 4th planet in our solar system, the red planet with the similar size as that of ours, is considered as our new home for residence… Well don’t worry. It’s not the thing that our planet is soon going to face an apocalypse or something, but this is the part of our progress in becoming a type or maybe higher type of civilization which completely has the control of our ow planet and even reside on the other ones (we’re now almost type 0.7 civilization in 10,000 years of civilization). Major countries like the US, India, have already sent their probes to the planet to study its geological and environmental aspects and plan the next mission in accordance to the data acquired. The major missions were the Opportunity, Curiosity rover sent to Mars by NASA (US), and MOM (Mars Orbiter Mission) by ISRO (India). The journey to Mars is almost 7.5 months for single way. A must watch series of six episodes was premiered and presented by National Geographic channel named as MARS.

Both private and public organizations have made commitments to researching the viability of long-term colonization efforts and to taking steps toward a permanent human presence on Mars. Space agencies engaged in research or mission planning include NASA, Roscosmos, and the China National Space Administration. Private organizations include Mars One, SpaceX, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing.

Let us have the actual data analysis of the planet which we consider as our new home, because numbers are quite more trustworthy than the human verbal statements made. Numbers are better in showing the fact, however, the fact maybe promising or disheartening.

Earth is similar to Venus in bulk composition, size and surface gravity, but Mars’s similarities to Earth are more compelling when considering colonization. These include:

The Martian day (or sol) is very close in duration to Earth’s. A solar day on Mars is 24 hours, 39 minutes and 35.244 seconds.

Mars has a surface area that is 28.4% of Earth’s, only slightly less than the amount of dry land on Earth (which is 29.2% of Earth’s surface). Mars has half the radius of Earth and only one-tenth the mass. This means that it has a smaller volume (~15%) and lower average density than Earth.

Mars has an axial tilt of 25.19°, similar to Earth’s 23.44°. As a result, Mars has seasons much like Earth, though they last nearly twice as long because the Martian year is about 1.88 Earth years. The Martian north pole currently points at Cygnus, not Ursa Minor like Earth’s.

Recent observations by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, ESA’s Mars Express and NASA’s Phoenix Lander confirm the presence of water ice on Mars.

The founder of SpaceX, Elon Musk said about the mars mission: “Even at a million people you’re assuming an incredible amount of productivity per person, because you would need to recreate the entire industrial base on Mars. You would need to mine and refine all of these different materials, in a much more difficult environment than Earth. There would be no trees growing. There would be no oxygen or nitrogen that are just there. No oil.

Excluding organic growth, if you could take 100 people at a time, you would need 10,000 trips to get to a million people. But you would also need a lot of cargo to support those people. In fact, your cargo to person ratio is going to be quite high. It would probably be 10 cargo trips for every human trip, so more like 100,000 trips. And we’re talking 100,000 trips of a giant spaceship”.

But the scientists like Neil De Grasse Tyson have something else to say about the same: “The problem is that there’s a huge difference between the first Europeans who traveled to America and the first humans that would travel to Mars. Even though the pilgrims knew they were also on a one-way trip, when they stepped off the boat they could still breathe the air and the trees were still made of wood so they could repair their ship, Tyson said in an interview in his office at the American Museum of Natural History.

But if you go to Mars you can’t breathe the air and you can’t just repair your ship – the first thing you’re going to do is set up a habitat module that resembles Earth”, Tyson said. “Well then are you really on Mars? No – you’re on Earth on Mars.” So, this was the brief about the mars mission and its possibilities and impossibilities as well. What do you think? Have we really found our new home? Are we ready to go there and settle ourselves yet? And last and the best question, would you like to settle on the new home forever and build a new empire?
